How to Measure Height, Weight & Chest Accurately for Agniveer Rally (2026)
In Indian Armed Forces recruitment rallies across Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Physical Measurement Test (PMT) is an unyielding rejection point. Even if you complete the 1.6 KM run in the first group, falling short of the standard by 0.5 cm or failing the 5 cm chest expansion means immediate, non-appealable disqualification. Here is the official measurement guide to prepare at home.
1. How the Military Medical Officer Measures Height
- Position: Stand barefoot on a flat, solid ground against a vertical stadiometer wall.
- Body Alignment: Heels together, buttocks, upper back (scapula), and back of the head must firmly touch the vertical surface.
- Frankfort Horizontal Plane: Look straight forward. Your ear canal and the lower edge of the eye socket must form a horizontal line. Do not tilt your chin upwards—tilting chin lowers the crown vertex and reduces measurable height.
2. The 77 CM + 5 CM Chest Expansion Formula
The military board uses a non-stretchable measuring tape wrapped directly around the bare torso across the nipple line:
- Normal (Exhaled): Stand naturally with arms by your sides. Exhale normally. Minimum cutoff is 77 cm (for General Duty & Technical).
- Expanded (Inhaled): Inhale deeply into your chest cage (diaphragmatic expansion). The tape must read at least 5 cm greater than your normal measurement.
- Common Pitfall: Do not just puff your abdomen or shrug your shoulders upwards—expansion must be thoracic (ribcage expanding outward).
3. Height vs Proportionate Weight (BMI Standard)
Weight is evaluated based on height and age (17.5 to 21 years). In general, a candidate with 168 cm height should weigh between 50.8 kg and 62.0 kg. Underweight candidates (BMI < 18.0) and clinically overweight candidates (BMI > 25.0) are placed on Temporary Rejection (TR) with 42 days to achieve permissible limits.
Once your height, weight, and chest meet the requirements, the next major hurdle is the Orthopedic & Blood Examination (Knock-Knees, Carrying Angle, Flat Foot, CBC). Send your posture photos to the AgniFit WhatsApp Screener to receive your preliminary DGAFMS benchmark score within 30 seconds.
